Using tar ointment for itching from insect bites is an old tradition, the fact that it also hides the horse´s scent and thus also reduces the risk of new attacks on exposed areas is a bonus. 

Tar Ointment from Trikem is mildly antiseptic and is used on oozing rashes, wounds and skin irritations.

When you use tar salve, it is important to clean the exposed areas and wounds first, then lubricate the area you want to protect with the tar salve 1-2 times a day.
